1-17-19 Indiana Forecast: Wintry mix moving through this AM – significant winter storm brings widespread impacts this weekend! N.

Indiana Video:

Light precipitation will continue to work northeast into the area this morning, with a burst of snow mainly northeast of Indy, and brief freezing rain in the Indy metro.  Through the morning, the snow will gradually transition to rain in most of Central Indiana, with wet snow continuing in northern Indiana.  Most of the precipitation will be moving out 3-4pm, but pockets of drizzle will continue.

Watch for areas of dense fog to build this evening, then gradually working out from west to east during the overnight.  As most of this forms, most areas will be above freezing.  Late tonight we can’t rule out isolated patches of drizzle, but it will tend to become spotty.

Here’s our current thinking regarding our weekend winter storm regarding precipitation-type…again, based on the track of the low pressure system this can be slightly tilted differently so stay tuned to future updates:

In today’s video we discuss potential snow accumulations as well, but the biggest thing we all need to factor in here is even the slightest shift and intensity in the low pressure system north to south will impact accumulations and whether we introduce more ice/rain. Also to consider on the backside of this low pressure system will be winds gusting at times to 35-45mph with the snow changing over from heavy, wet snow to very fluffy snow as temps crash into the low 20s to upper teens. It’s late Saturday night into early Sunday morning where we have a growing concern for blowing/drifting snow and reduced visibility:

Wind chills into Monday morning are quite significant, extremely cold air works in well below zero also helped out by the snowpack laid down and arctic air flowing overtop of it:
