1-11-18 Illinois: Sharp temperature drop this afternoon/tonight leads to icy concerns….details here! N.

Today’s video:

Updated winter storm watches/advisories through Friday morning:

Today will be a wild day of weather for the state.  An arctic front will deliver a 30-40 degree temperature drop within 2 hours this afternoon and evening.  Rain showers will transition to freezing rain and sleet from west to east this afternoon into tonight:

Check out the DRAMATIC drop in temperatures from this afternoon through tonight.  Concern will be for a flash freeze on roadways along with a glaze of ice from freezing rain and sleet.

Here is the ice accumulation forecast from the hi-res NAM.  I actually really agree with this, showing a general glaze of ice possible, with the highest amounts in southeast Illinois where up to a tenth inch is possible.

The main area that we expect to see snow accumulation potential would be across southeast Illinois.  Given differences in the data, still very low confidence on amounts.

Arctic air will take over through the weekend, then we track a clipper coming in Sunday night and Monday.  This will have potential to bring widespread light snow across the state, followed by reinforcing cold into mid-week.
