8-23-19 Northern Plains: Increasing rainfall chances this weekend into early next week from west to east…some being locally heavy. N.

Today’s video:

Observed rainfall over the past 24 hours…only isolated light showers across the far western Dakotas dry east:

Total rainfall guidance we anticipate through noon tomorrow…some localized heavy rainfall as a low level jet stream increases moisture chances from the western third of the Dakotas to ~Rugby, North Dakota. Totals are anticipated to be at a base of 0.25-0.75″, with localized 1-2″ in spots is to be expected in spots as well. Very dry across the eastern Dakotas to Minnesota continuing:

Watching for fairly widespread coverage of rainfall Sunday into Monday from northwest to southeast as a low pressure develops and swings a cold front working through shown well by the 0z European model. This won’t be an instance likely where everyone across the eastern Dakotas through Minnesota cashes in on rainfall, but this will likely be our best chance for more widespread rainfall risks:

Total rainfall through next Tuesday is below…the GFS model likely a bit underdone across the western Dakotas in the short-term with locally heavy rainfall, but showing well the increasing moderate to heavy rainfall threats across central and eastern ND/SD into central to eastern MN as a surface low pressure develop Sunday into Monday. Totals will vary between a range of 0.5-1.5″, some locations seeing as high as 1.5-3″ can’t be ruled out:
