5-3-18 Northern Plains: Details on rain risks in the area today and scattered shower activity for the weekend. B.

Today’s Video:

Good Thursday morning everyone!

A couple of scattered rain showers have developed as a piece of energy dives southeast into the area from Canada. Generally, dry air will prevent much of this from reaching the ground but ~30-40% coverage of light showers is possible today for North Dakota into Northern Minnesota. Current thinking is generally accumulations will be less than 0.10″ and many could miss out all together.

The bigger story today will be the southwest flow and energy that will produce additional rainfall – potentially heavy at times – for Southern Minnesota. I do think that scattered showers could make it a bit further north into Southern South Dakota, but generally very light accumulations and scattered showers with only about ~40% coverage in that area.

Dry air will work in behind this system and temperature will soar back into the mid-70s for much of the area tomorrow and into Saturday.

Another piece of energy will move into northern portions of the area as early as late tomorrow afternoon and into the overnight hours. This could produce scattered showers – perhaps storms – that could put down some light right *generally* less than a tenth of an inch, but higher totals possible in isolated heavier bursts. Additional showers could re-develop late Saturday and put down more rain in Southern Minnesota. Here’s a look at the sim. radar and rain accumulation into Saturday afternoon.
