4-4-19 Minnesota Forecast: Scattered rains + warmup expected into the weekend…discussing storm system mid-next week. I.

Today’s Video:

Good morning everyone! A few light showers will be possible through the remainder of the day in the southern third of MN while a weak wave gliding through northern ND will lift into far northwestern MN mainly after 4pm CDT, bringing a batch of rain mixing with snow at times. Dry air will be an inhibiting factor for light rain chances in southern MN this evening, then eastern MN overnight, but watch for the risk as it will likely dampen things with most of this activity lifting east by midnight, though isolated showers will remain in west-central MN after this time. Simulated radar through 12am CDT tonight:

Isolated showers will remain a threat stretching between Fargo and Duluth into Friday morning, fading with time into the afternoon. Then, a boundary develops in southern MN Friday night where scattered showers will likely develop and slowly progress eastward across southeastern MN through the day Saturday. Watch for another disturbance to lift in from the west and bring additional scattered rains with a few storms Saturday night into Sunday before the greatest coverage shifts into the eastern half of the state by mid-afternoon Sunday.

Total rainfall through Sunday reveals a general 0.25-0.75″ for most areas of MN, though a few pockets can pick up more or less.

We’re eyeing fog risks again Friday and Saturday morning as warmer air works over the cooler grounds. The best risks for fog will be in western MN Friday morning, then northern/western MN Saturday morning. Areas that still have a slight snowpack will have better chances for fog.

A more substantial threat to watch will come as early as Tuesday night and lift out Thursday night. Snow will be likely on the northern periphery of this incoming storm system, however the exact placement of the surface low and strength are yet to be determined. Regardless, there is the risk for accumulating snow (currently southern MN at this time) given there are signals that support such an event into mid-next week. Know that there is something there and will need monitoring. Strong winds will also likely accompany this wave.

Total precipitation over the next 7 days: A large sum of what is shown in southern MN comes with mid-next week’s wave, which is likely skewing these amounts. However, current guidance suggests MN with the heaviest precipitation amounts (~1-2″ of liquid possible) with lighter amounts heading into northern MN. Note that this is subject to change as trends in mid-next week’s system will alter what is shown.
