4-3-19 Minnesota Forecast: Disturbances clips southern areas through Thursday…eyeing additional rain risks into the weekend. I.

Today’s Video:

Good morning everyone! A weak wave from the Central Plains is lifting northeastward, but still remains across southern SD as of 9:55am CDT. Also, light snow showers noted earlier this morning in east-central MN have lifted out. We’ll watch for the wave across the Central Plains bring light rains to the far southern portions of the state this afternoon into tonight.

Simulated radar through 1pm CDT Friday: Watch for the light rains in southern SD to progress eastward through the day and impact mainly the southern-most three county rows of MN this afternoon but especially into this evening and overnight. Watch for the light rains to lift northeastward during the day Thursday and bring these chances to central MN as well and snow showers in northeastern MN into Thursday night. While not greatly shown, there is the potential for light snow mixing with the rain along the far northern-most periphery of the precipitation south of Minneapolis late tonight into Thursday morning, but any snow accumulation should be minimal and under 0.5″ if it occurs. Another wave, this time further north into far northern MN will bring rain showers mixing with snow at times late Thursday afternoon through the overnight, lifting out Friday morning. A general 0.1-0.5″ of liquid is expected in the southern third of MN with locally higher amounts in far southwestern MN approaching 1″. The model shown below is likely a tad underdone in far northern MN.

We’re eyeing slight fog risks Thursday morning but mainly into Friday morning for western MN given warmer temperatures over still relatively cool grounds. Slick spots aren’t expected as temps remain just above freezing.

Additional disturbances will bring rain chances to the state with Friday night into Saturday our next target, then Saturday night into Sunday with more coverage in light to moderate rains as the storm system strengthens. The bulk of the rains will exit to the east early Sunday night, but a few patches of light mixed precipitation will be possible into mid-next week. However, most will remain dry Sunday night through Tuesday.

Here’s a look at 7-day precipitation: Most are susceptible to 0.25-0.75″ of liquid through this timespan with locally higher amounts 1″+ being possible

Here’s a look at temperatures over the next four days: Temperatures will quickly ramp up into late work week and the weekend as the upper-level trough that has hung around over the last few days lifts out and is replaced with building heights and southwest flow aloft. Watch for additional flooding risks along area tributaries as the remaining snowpack melts during this period.
