4-2-19 ND/SD: Tracking sct’d light snows through tonight…rain risks increase for southern SD into Wednesday. I.

Today’s Video:

Good Tuesday morning everyone! The arctic front we discussed about yesterday is bringing scattered snow showers to mainly the eastern third of ND and clipping northeastern SD. Upper-level energy will continue to swing across ND through the daytime hours and continue the threat for scattered snow showers and squalls mainly in northeastern ND as the day progresses. Plenty of lift is provided by this wave, so some of the squalls can produce localized coatings of snow in pockets for eastern ND.

Simulated radar through 12am CDT tonight: Scattered snow showers and squalls in eastern ND and northeastern SD work eastward over the next few hours with remaining energy continuing the risk for re-developing squalls into the afternoon hours in northeastern ND. A few isolated showers will be possible further south into central SD late afternoon before fading into the evening.

Here’s a look at potential accumulation with the scattered snow shower activity through tonight: Localized coatings of snow will be possible in eastern ND but many in SD will receive little to no measurable snow, especially areas further south.

Simulated radar from 12am CDT through 1pm CDT Thursday: A disturbance from the Central Plains will bring light rains to the southern portions of SD from just after midnight tonight through the day Wednesday and gradually fading/pulling east Wednesday night into early Thursday. Snow will mix in at times, but is most likely in the Blackhills of SD where light snow accumulations of 1-3″ will be likely. An additional weak wave with a front is likely to track through ND with a light rain/snow mix Thursday.

Watch for additional waves to bring scattered rain chances to the Dakotas Friday night into Saturday and then again Saturday night into Sunday. A brief lull in activity is likely into late Sunday before spotty rain chances lift back into southern ND and a majority of SD into Monday.

Here’s a look at 7 day precipitation: Note the GFS (not shown) is wetter in northern ND, particularly into the weekend, but have leaned more with a less wet solution for now.

Here’s a look at temperatures over the next four days: Colder air remains, especially in eastern ND today, but a front will finally move through late Thursday and allow temperatures to really ramp up into the weekend. Temperatures will be well into the 60s in SD and the southern half of ND by Friday.

Winds will gust with the snow showers today as high as 35mph at times from the northwest:
