12-19-18 Northern Plains: Tracking light showers this morning, watching a few chances for snow. B.

Today’s Video:

Good Morning!

We’re watching a weak wave of light rain/freezing rain progression across Eastern North Dakota and into Minnesota. This wave continues to push off to the east throughout the day today.

Note, we’ll see wrap around precipitation as we work into later this afternoon and evening. We could develop a mix of rain, snow and freezing rain with a line of precipitation that dives into the far Eastern Dakotas and Minnesota. The best chance for light snowfall accumulations will be the further you go into Minnesota.

Another big story for today will be very strong wind gusts that are moving into the Western Dakotas this morning. Wind gusts up to 45 MPH have led to wind advisories with these strong winds persisting throughout the day today.

Skies should clear in the Western Dakotas this afternoon aiding in the strong wind gust threat. We could see some lingering clouds in Minnesota tomorrow, but most of the Dakotas see a generally nice day.

However, as we work into Friday afternoon, our next wave of precipitation likely begins to work into western portions of the area. We’ll likely initially see a mix of some light rain and snow in Western North Dakota, with a better chance of accumulating snow as the system organizes in Northern Minnesota. The GFS has been very consistent with the risk for several inches of accumulating snowfall in Northern Minnesota Friday Night/Saturday:

The next big system we’ll need to watch could arrive as early as Christmas night. Data has been consistent with a major storm system cutting into the Lakes and perhaps producing a band of heavy snowfall. It’s something we’ll watch very closely moving forward:
