10-30-19 Northern Plains: Settling into a blustery, cold pattern…waves of minor snow late week – next week. N.

Good morning!  No video for today’s update, so we’ll dive into more details with text & images.  A mainly dry pattern today through tomorrow as very cold air continues.  Check out the temperature departure from normal over the past 2 days!  It has been 30º below normal in western South Dakota.

Our pattern moving forward is pretty straightforward…..continued cold, blustery, with several chances for light snow.  No big accumulating snow events are in the forecast, but the polar jet stream will be blowing through our region, with weak moisture-starved disturbances passing through.  Each system that passes help sustain the cold and limits us from warming up.

Our next precipitation concern works into the area from the northwest Thursday night working across the North & South Dakota borders, east into central Minnesota.

Forecast snow totals through Friday look under 1″ in general.  Many of us don’t see more than passing flurries.

We’ll see flurries work out of the area by early Saturday.  Saturday looks quiet, blustery, and cold.  A few additional flurries and snow showers may pass Sunday morning.  A stronger wave of energy may work into the area Monday, bringing potential for light accumulating snow – current data would favor areas from North Dakota to central Minnesota with the best chance.

Possible Snow Monday:

There are signs of a stronger wave mid to late next week.  Too far out for details, but could impact more of the area.
