1-28-19 Northern Plains: *DANGEROUS COLD THIS WEEK*. Snow showers/squalls into tomorrow. B.

Today’s Video:

Good Monday morning everyone. Snow showers in Eastern Minnesota are pushing out of the area, but snow showers and squalls are increasing across Western South Dakota and these will be common over the next 36 hours.

We’ll also see very strong wind gusts throughout the day today in the western Dakotas which will lead to visibility issues at times with some of these snow showers/squalls. Here’s a look at the simulated radar from the HRRR:

These winds will combined with true arctic air as a lobe of the tropospheric polar vortex dives into the area this week. This will lead to multiple days of dangerous wind chills from -40F to -60F which have led to wind chill warnings, watches and advisories being issued for the area. Here’s a look at wind chills from overnight tonight into midday Wednesday with brutal wind chills across the E. Dakotas and Minnesota continuing into Thursday morning:

Higher pressure will work in later in the day on Tuesday, but a weak wave of energy will likely spawn some light snow in the Western Dakotas Wednesday morning:

Here’s a look at temperatures over the next 4 days with record cold temperatures likely Tuesday and Wednesday. Wind chills today through Thursday will be dangerous, please take extreme caution and have a plan in place if you were to lose power.

Wind gusts will finally begin to die down on Wednesday, but strong winds will continue as the cold drops in tonight and tomorrow.
