1-15-19 Northern Plains: Increasing chances of accumulating snow on Friday… bitter cold returns this weekend. B.

Today’s Video:

Good Tuesday morning everyone. We have some snow showers north of the border that are pushing off to the ESE. A few of these could make their way into Northern Minnesota with some flurries not being ruled out into North Dakota. Overall, not expecting much impact from these.

We do have dense fog advisories (freezing fog) in effect in portions of South Dakota. This fog will slowly lift into the early afternoon as winds pick up from the incoming front:

Winds could gust up to 20-30 MPH today as the front moves through. Here’s a look at wind gusts over the next 4 days:

Temperatures behind the front will plummet with widespread single digits likely for high temperatures tomorrow and Thursday in the Eastern Dakotas and the northern half of Minnesota. Here’s a look at temperatures over the next 4 days:

A weak wave will work through as we work into tomorrow afternoon and evening that could drop some light snow accumulations in Southern South Dakota. Here’s a look at the simulated radar and the latest NAM snowfall forecast:

The better chance for accumulating snow will come on Thursday night and Friday with a wave that works in SW ND and South Dakota. Some areas could pick up 6″+ with this system, but variability remains on the overall intensity. We’ll put out an official forecast tomorrow and/or Thursday, but lean slightly towards the stronger GFS right now given some frontogensis forcing.

Here’s a look at city charts for Minneapolis, Sioux Falls, Bismarck and Pierre:
