Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota
Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeNzXr5lHH4&feature=youtu.be&hd=1 Southern portions of South Dakota and Minnesota picked up very heavy snowfall with blizzard conditions on Monday.  Overall, the snowfall forecast panned out well for most areas.  As expected, we saw a very sharp cut-off on the northern edge of this storm.  Here is a map showing observed snowfall amounts vs. our final forecast we issued Sunday: No major systems are expected for the rest of the week.  We will track a couple minor disturbances to bring light snow chances over the next couple of days.  Temperatures will remain above average through the week.  A brief cool-down arrives for the weekend.  A stronger storm looks possible towards the latter portion of next week.   A few flurries possible possible across South Dakota this morning, then we will watch…

Video (5:00): http://youtu.be/U_WqCUXI72A?hd=1 Good Monday morning! We are continuing to track the blizzard that is working it's way across portions of the Northern Plains today. Here is a look at the current radar. Heavy snow bands in Southern Minnesota and extreme Southeast South Dakota are fairly stagnant at this time. This will allow for snow to accumulate very quickly over the next few hours. If you take a look at the simulated radar through tomorrow morning, you can see heavy snow bands linger in Southeast South Dakota and Southern Minnesota into this evening. Snow will likely end for South Dakota late this evening but snow looks to continue for portions of Minnesota into early tomorrow morning. The latest HRRR is picking up on the heavy bands of snow that have…

Video (4:30):  http://youtu.be/8_MRxbdYQq0?hd=1 Good Friday morning!  We have some light rain showers working across North Dakota this morning with temperatures hovering in the mid-30s for much of the state. Scattered showers will linger in the area into tonight especially in Northern and Central North Dakota. Overall, there shouldn't be any huge impacts. High temperatures today will again be very mild. We would not rule out some upper 50s in southern portions of South Dakota.  However, things will change abruptly beginning Saturday. Winds will begin to shift out of the north as a storm develops in the rockies. This will draw in colder air for your Saturday and Saturday night and allow snow to be the primary mode of precipitation as the low pressure system moves off to the east. Snow…

1-18-18 Northern Plains: High impact winter storm this weekend! B.

Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota
Video (4:00): http://youtu.be/CmlMFyQ6hjA?hd=1 Good Thursday morning everyone!  As we've discussed the past several days, temperatures are on the rise today which will begin to melt the remaining snow pack in South Dakota and deplete snow cover in North Dakota and Minnesota. Spring-like temperatures will dominate today and tomorrow with nearly the entire region above freezing and highs in the 40s and 50s in portions of South Dakota.  However, things are going to quickly revert back to a wintry pattern into the weekend. As we have discussed in previous updates, a high impact winter storm is likely this weekend and into early next week. The GFS and European models are similar with the track of this storm but vary on timing and snowfall amounts. The past several runs by both models have…

1-17-18 Northern Plains Update: Warming trend through late week…watching weekend snow potential. N.

Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota
Good Wednesday morning!  After enduring another spell of brutal temperatures over the past several days, a nice warm-up is on the way for the second half of the week.  The weather will be mainly quiet until we get to the weekend, when a potent storm system looks to track across the central Plains into the Great Lakes.  This will bring the potential of a swath of snowfall (possibly significant) to impact portions of the region later this weekend.  More details in today's video and the discussion below.  Have a blessed day, and let us know if you have any questions! Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YwrGpfqOr8&feature=youtu.be&hd=1 After enduring another spell of brutal temperatures over the past several days, a nice warm-up is on the way!  Check out the temperatures 5,000 feet aloft into late…

1-16-18 Northern Plains: Dangerous wind chills today, but a warm-up in sight! B.

Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota
Video (3:00): http://youtu.be/wAO4sqiLx8I?hd=1 Good Tuesday morning. As far as precipitation, there is virtually nothing going on across the region this morning. Some scattered flurries and snow showers cannot be ruled out in far eastern portions of Minnesota throughout today. The big story this morning is the dangerous temperatures most areas are seeing. The latest wind chill map shows the extent of the dangerous wind chills through much of the north central US. Wind chill warnings are in effect for values of -25 to -45 until 11AM CST. Frost bite can occur in less than 10 minutes in these conditions! Luckily, relief is on the way. As an upper-level ridge pushes east into the central US, temperatures will quickly moderate. Overnight lows will not go below zero in most areas tonight,…

Video (4:30): http://youtu.be/m8y_yCmWsiw?hd=1 Good Monday morning everyone and happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  Overall, things are pretty quiet across much of the region but there could be some wrap-around snow showers today in parts of Eastern Minnesota from a low pressure system diving through the Great Lakes. Here's a look at simulated radar showing this potential today and into tonight:  However, the bigger story the next 24 hours will be the dangerously cold wind chill values throughout the Northern Plains. Wind Chill Warnings and Advisories have been issued until noon tomorrow. A winter weather advisory has also been issued until mid-day today in portions of North Dakota and Minnesota for blowing and drifting snow due to strong winds. Wind gusts will be around 30 MPH throughout much of today…
