4-21-18 *SPECIAL SAT LONG RANGE UPDATE* Details on some latest thinking this morning next 3-4 weeks. https://youtu.be/11qNAPqcq8E We updated weeks 3/4 and May from yesterday. This is something I have never done before but after some additional research and data into the office here this morning I wanted to adjust. In the video I explain why. Please bear in mind we are coming off of uncharted territory here with respect to this pattern. To date this is the coldest April on record. We are working hard to come up with the best answers possible. My main reasons for the shift is the continuous signal for blocking the models fail to realize in the 11-15 day...once we come within the 10 day range they adjust drastically not only with temps but precip too (hints…

Weeks 1 and 2 precipitation from normal:  Iowa and northern Missouri stays very dry relative to normal for week 1....focus for moisture west and south.  Week 2 we still favor the drier…

Today's video: http://youtu.be/XnQYr2vIZtQ?hd=1 Latest snowfall totals verification across Nebraska and Iowa showing another swath of 6-12" in many of the areas that just saw heavy snow this past week: Where the snowpack is the heaviest mainly across Iowa Friday morning, watching for patchy dense fog possible with a temperature inversion aloft: Updated thoughts on accumulations...it's no question that data initially had overdone rainfall across Kansas earlier this week vs current analysis...we expect there to be a void in precipitation across Kansas, exactly where that sets up is difficult to nail down with 100% confidence, but we have circled 2 areas where we feel most comfortable for ~0.25-0.75" total through the weekend; if you have questions more local to your locations, please don't hesitate to reach out! Video (5:40): http://youtu.be/kgaI4C1C1VU?hd=1 Winter storm warnings in effect through this evening/overnight across north-central Iowa: Forecast radar from 10am to 11pm CDT today: A band of 6-12" is expected across northern Iowa.  Here is our updated snowfall risk graphic: Total precipitation with today's system: Quiet weather returns Thursday, then we watch rain chances Friday and Saturday for Nebraska.  Iowa looks to miss out and stay dry late week through the weekend.   There is still some uncertainty regarding the amount of rain.  It certainly appears the heaviest will be across southwest Nebraska.  The European model puts down a band of 0.5" to 0.75" around North Platte.  The GFS is more robust with precipitation across Nebraska.  I think the European has a better handle from this distance. High temperatures over the next…

Video: http://youtu.be/p7y83Q3sP6s?hd=1 Good morning!  Winter storm warnings and advisories are out for Iowa for expected snowfall on Wednesday: Simulated radar going from tonight through Wednesday evening: Showers move into Nebraska this evening through the overnight, then we see a transition to heavy, wet snow in northeast Nebraska during the pre-dawn hours, then expected a thump of heavy, wet snow in north-central Iowa Wednesday morning, continuing into the afternoon: Here is a map of our thinking regarding the risk of snow accumulations.  We do think a band of 3-6" is likely across northern Iowa, with isolated higher totals expected. Total precipitation from tonight through Wednesday evening: The next threat for precipitation arrives Friday through the weekend, but this threat will be focused across the western and southern Plains.  High pressure centered…

Probability of seeing at LEAST 3" of snow off the EPS for Iowa on Wednesday: Still looking at a very good chance for rain across central and western Kansas Friday and Saturday!  Data is in very good agreement given we are several days out.  Here is how the GFS handles this system: Don't necessarily take the data verbatim as they may be overdone, but GFS and EURO in excellent agreement.  Here is the GFS 7-day rainfall: European rainfall forecast: High temperatures over the next 4 days: Low temperatures over the next 4…

Good Saturday morning! Hope you all are staying well and safe as a powerful storm system continues to bring very strong winds and blizzard conditions to the area.  Here is a look at the radar this morning (as of 5:55 AM CDT): Here is how the radar should look going throughout our Saturday.  This animation below goes through 8pm CDT this evening.  Note the snow band across Nebraska will gradually shift east through the day.  We will also be watching for very heavy snowfall to build across northwest Iowa (Spencer, Sheldon, Storm Lake, Estherville areas) going throughout this morning, and note that the snows continue to build south and eastward with time throughout the day over Iowa.   Here is a look at additional snowfall accumulation going from now (6am…
