A slight risk for severe weather is in place across portions of Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri this afternoon for damaging winds and a couple of tornadoes. Another slight risk is in place across portions of the Mid-Atlantic where damaging winds will be possible with thunderstorms today.
The big story will be the upper-level ridge that is building in, spreading oppressive heat across the nation’s heartland. Heat Indexes are forecast to be 100-110° as far north as the Dakotas! Excessive heat watches and heat advisories are already in place across a large chunk of the central U.S. and I expect those to be extended east into the weekend.
