TONIGHT: Lake effect snow showers will start to wind down in SW MI late tonight as the winds over the lakes finally subside. Skies tonight will be partly cloudy across the northern sections of the forecast area otherwise should see some clear skies develop tonight however warm air starts to work in so we will not be nearly as cold as we were this morning. Look for lows tonight to be in the lower 20s across the region.
Additional snow over western MI over the next 24hrs looks to be ~1-4″ pending where the bands setup before the snow machine shuts down.
FRIDAY-SATURDAY: Our next disturbance of any sort to worry about comes Friday night and into Saturday but as of this afternoon I just don’t think its going to be anything significant. The biggest threat from this system will be a rain to snow scenario perhaps with some slick spots developing due to the Arctic air working in. Right now Its not looking like any accumulation is possible snow wise with this system Friday night. There is still time for this to change as we know how unreliable the computers have been this season. The issue with this low pressure system this weekend is the blocking area of high pressure is retreating to the west as the storm moves in so it allows the low to cut through the lakes. This is a rare outcome but the challenges of this season never cease to amaze me.
Now the cold that arrives behind this front is barbaric. Overnight actual temps will get down below 0 with wind chills even colder. I wouldn’t be shocked to see some wind chill advisories/warnings with this shot of cold.
SAT NIGHT-SUNDAY: Morning data then hints another possible clipper to come in with the seasons coldest air yet. Right now knowing the track of that clipper is impossible but the ECMWF/GEM suggest Sunday morning there could be some light accumulating snows once again from this clipper.
Upper level energy supportive of snow Sunday AM via the Canadian:
European model also sees this clipper. Devil in the details here Sunday morning. With this kind of cold snow can easily accumulate. Its too early for me to speculate on any accumulation.
Next system worth mention comes around the 20th of JAN. Right now the EURO and the GEM see the system as a clipper and want to bring accumulating snows with it..the GEM is further south over the central Ohio valley but the EURO is much further north so at this distance all I will do is say keep JAN 20th in the back of your minds for now. The disturbance is noted here on the GEM in eastern Iowa. Wed-Fri of next week temps continue to moderate and then we will need to watch our next storm system ~23rd of JAN. M.
