EVENING – TONIGHT: An area of low pressure will continue to move off to the regions west and north through the evening hours tonight. This and a surface boundary have allowed for rain and drizzle to continue over the region today.
Overnight I expect isolated to scattered areas of rain to continue across the region as the low continues to the north of the forecast zones. While I’m not anticipating any heavy rain some brief times of moderate rain will remain possible especially across northern IL/IN before midnight.
Overnight I think showers will begin to diminish after 12-1 am tonight and through the overnight hours. However, some drizzle and isolated showers will remain.
Lows overnight will be in the mid 30’s and 40’s.
WEEKEND: Saturday we will be watching an approaching winter storm system that will bring in rain and accumulating snow the forecast area.
By 7-9 Am Saturday morning rain and snow will enter southern and western Illinois from the south. While places from roughly Springfield east will start out as rain, places to the west will start out as snow.
By early afternoon rain and snow will still be ongoing across Illinois with some of the rain working into western and southwestern portions of Indiana. Snow will still be occurring across western portions of Illinois.
Through the afternoon hours the rain will continue to spread north across Illinois and east into Indiana. As it does the cold air will start to filter into the storm more allowing for rain across Illinois to begin its changeover to snow. By 4-6 PM the rain/snow changeover looks to be complete across northwestern Indiana and into northeastern and central portions of Illinois.
Through the evening the low will track to the northeast. More precipitation will begin spreading eastward across Indiana and into western Ohio. By 9-11 PM Saturday evening the rain will start to chance over to a sleet or wintry mix across eastern Illinois and parts of western Indiana. The western half of Michigan will be seeing snow at this time as well.
By 1-2 AM Sunday rain will start to change over to sleet and a mix, then over to snow across the central portions of Indiana, including the Indy metro area.
Overnight Saturday into Sunday rain and snow will continue to the north and east across the region. Cold air will file in very quickly overnight so rain will start to change over to snow farther east. Keep in mind temperatures will fall rapidly Saturday night into Sunday so flash freezing will remain a concern!
By 6 AM Sunday morning snow will be ongoing across Michigan, eastern Indiana, and western Ohio. Some of this could start to “fluff” up as ratios go up and temperatures go down.
Through the morning into early afternoon snow will begin to taper off from west to east across the forecast region as the low exits to the northeast. Winds will be gusting from WNW at 10-35MPH Sunday afternoon making for cold wind chills. Here is the latest forecast snowfall map! Keep in mind this map could chance as new data becomes available. We will have a new update out by 10 AM Saturday morning.
